          Communication in the workplace has evolved at speeds that were not even thought possible. 

Evolution of Communication
  • Face to Face Communication - is a concept in sociology, linguistics, media and communication studies describing social interaction carried out without any mediating technology. Face-to-face interaction is defined as the mutual influence of individuals’ direct physical presence with his/her body language. 

  • Letters and Writing Communication - were the next step in the evolution of communication in the workplace. 
  • Telephone Communication - were the next big breakthrough in digital communication during the time of their popularity but in the beginning you were. 
Negative Side to Non-Digital Communication types: 
  1. Face to Face interaction is not always a reasonable methods of communicating overlong distances. 
  2. Paper notes or methods have to be left for someone and utilize man power to deliver them. 
  3. Mail takes a long time to reach its destination and doesn't allow a company to react quick enough to situations. 
The Need for Policies
  • With every new information there must be a good of policies and procedures to govern the usage of the invitation. 
  • When the telephone was first invented there was a certain etiquette that was followed. 
  • there was a certain business etiquette or standard developed for sending mail at the times when letters were the primary communication tools for business. 
Advantages for Digital Communication
  • It is easier for a small business to get their name out there and recognized. 
  • Records are east to keep consumers can give favorable review of company through social media. 
  • Information is easily shared. 
Disadvantages for Digital Communication 
  • Communication can be hailed due to technical problems. 
  • Market are no longer a familiar zone. Cultural customs comes into play. 
  • Time and Value can be different. 
  • Appropriate attire may change. 
  • Records can be corrupted, lost and compromised without proper protection such as Fire Walls. 
Long Distance Communication 
  • Communicating across the different markets and regions. 
  • Global Communication is important in today's economic environment. 
  • communication can be almost instant. Time is Money! 
  • Markets are no longer limited by geography. 
  • Allows the best of the best to be utilized as groups that spans the globe.
Positive Communication
  • Positive Communication can increase the companies reputation. 
  • companies can help customers or reach difference demographics with positive communication. 
Negative Communication
  • Negative Communication can ruin or strain customer relations.
  • Policies that reflect this should include verbiage that pertains to the mission statement or core values. 
Communication Policies and Procedures for the Digital Age. 
  • Policies help to manage the flow of communication as well as effectively control misuse.
  • Policies give records that shows that employees knew about certain Policies and broke the rules.
Things to Remember when writing policies and procedures
  1. Local, State and Federal Laws and Guidelines.
  2. Company Values and Goals.
  3. Mission Statements or Core Competencies.
  4. Established Guidelines Already Established Human Resources.

Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA)    
          Was passed in 1986 to expand and revise deferral wiretapping and electronic eavesdropping provisions. It was envisioned to create "a fair balance between the privacy expectations of citizens and the legitimate needs of law enforcement".
  • ECPA lays out guidelines for law enforcement access to data. 
  • Under the stored Communications act , the government is able to access many kinds of stored Communications without a warrant.
  • CPA does include important provisions that protect a person's wire and electronic  Communications from being intercepted by another private individual.

Proper Procedures for Digital Communication
  1. Cutting costs (entire computer programs replace man hours and jobs).
  2. Making Communications easier through email, messenger, programs and Skype.
  3. Working from home is possible and can be efficient 
  4. Travel expenses are cut due to meetings made possible with Skype or other online video meeting Programs.
  5. Able to expand just by being available online.
          Companies need to protect themselves from Civil and Legal ramification that could occur due to abuse or bad electronic communications. Strong Policies and Extensive training are the best way to ensure that a companies best interest are upheld. 

Learning: 
          In this topic i learned about the history or the evolution of communication, the negative side to non-digital communication types. And also i learned more about the policies and procedures that we need to remember. And also we need to remember the things when we writing a policies because policies are really important.
